When you have a frustrating or impossible situation, first give the situation the Serenity Prayer Test:
God, Grant me the Serenity to Accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to Change the things I can,
And Wisdom to know the difference.
Can you do anything about it? If so, pray for God to give you the knowledge, the courage, and the ability to take action. But, if it is a behavior that you cannot control or something that you have to accept - say a prayer, write down the situation on a piece of paper, and open your GOD CAN. As you place the paper in the can, say out loud, "I can't do anything about this but God Can." Put the lid back on the can confident that God is now in control of the situation and He will take care of you and the situation. His Peace will follow. The more often you do this exercise the longer lasting and more complete will His peace be in your life.
This is a great gift for yourself or to give to someone else.
Place it in a location where it will be seen each day as a visual
reminder of where we should place our priorities.
Find yourself a clear glass jar. My jar is 6" tall and 4" across. Fill it with Walnuts in the shell. Count how many walnuts you put in the jar. Now fill the rest of the jar with rice measuring it as you go. Once filled, put the lid on and decorate with bow or other ornament. Add the following story from below on a small piece of paper rolled up like a scroll. Work the scroll into the ornament or bow. Or print the story on a label and put the label on the jar. In the story below, change the number of walnuts and amount of rice to match what you put in your jar.
Here is the story -
Our Priorities
The lesson of the Walnuts and Rice
This jar contains 20 walnuts and 2 cups of rice.
(change quantity to match your jar)
The walnuts represent the things God would like us to do. The Rice represents all the things that we feel we need or just want to do.
If you pour the rice into the jar first, the walnuts will never fit.
But, if you put the walnuts in first, the rice will fill in around
the walnuts and fit just fine.
The lesson, of course, is that if we put time with and for God
before the time for all the other things in our life, we'll have plenty
of time for both. However, if we put our things first, we'll never
fit time for God into our lives.
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33
